The first steps with Tribal Style Bellydance! From the Orient through North Africa, India, Spain, all the way to the Balcans, Tribal Style Bellydance blends various styles of dance and out comes a new dynamic dance with set rules. A group – tribe of strong, proud women dances in a group improvisation, the movements are earthy, grounded, snakelike, dignified.
Dare to enter the fascinating world of a dance style that won many hearts and changed many lives! Learn a secret language of the body that is spoken and understood by dancers all over the world! Gain a better understanding and control of your own body!
We learn the basic steps, moves and principles of the Improvised Tribal Style (ITS), ways of communicating without words, working in a group format and following the subtle but exact cues of the leader. Each dancer inhabits the role of a tribal leader and leads the group in improvisation for a while, then steps back and becomes a follower as another dancer takes over the lead.
We teach the ITS ‘Wüstenrosen’ format, developed by the Vienna-based tribe and steadily spreading over Austria. The ‘Wüstenrosen’ format has at its core the American Tribal Style by FatChanceBellyDance, with Blacksheep Bellydance and Gypsy Caravan variations of moves, and a growing number of own creations and variations. The clear and logical structure allows easy understanding with other ITS or ATS dancers and tribes of various improvisational tribal formats and lets us dance together, which is what tribal is ultimately about! Suitable for total beginners, no previous experience required.

Turkish, Egyptian, Choochoo, Half/Full-time Shimmy and Arabic are your old friends, you drill layering while cleaning your teeth, and basic posture is how you walk down the street. In this class we use our knowledge of the basics and principles of the Improvisational Tribal Style (ITS) ‘Wüstenrosen’ format, and learn new exciting variations and steps. We expand our repertoire of transitions and formations, adding Staggered, Chorus and Cascades. We adapt to various group sizes, from duets to full tribe, and we add flair and sound to our dance using wide colorful skirts and tribal – typical finger cymbals/zills.

Learn a new dance language with Unmata Improvisational Tribal Style! Whether or not you already know a combination-based movement language, this class will teach you the basic Unmata ITS vocabulary, with which you’ll be able to dance with people around the whole world, speaking the exact same language. This dance format, created by Amy Sigil, has its origins in American Tribal Style, Bellydance, HipHop and Hula, and it is the most recent addition to the Tribal language development. First seen in Austria at CarVie14 with an International ITS Collective from five different countries! 2015 Doro got her ITS I&II certificate and is Austria’s only teacher for Unmata ITS and she loves to share this style with you!
This energetic dance is all about teamwork, having fun and being actively engaged in the moment. ITS relies on a shared vocabulary of movements, each initiated by a distinct cue movement. The leader initiates the cue movement, then a short, choreographed combination, or combo, is performed. These combos can be done in any order, and none of the dancers know ahead of time which movements the leader will cue next.
In order for ITS to work, everyone must know the same vocabulary of movements. Because of this, ITS is a lot like a language. Like any language, vocabulary and grammar are the tools that you will use to be able to communicate. American Tribal Style (ATS®), created by Carolena Nericcio in the 1980’s, is the root language of ITS. This dialect of ATS®, could be compared to a ‘romance’ language of Latin (ex: Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French). It’s important to understand the roots of language in order to speak your modern tongue fluently.
When you learn a new language, it takes a long time to build a vocabulary to effectively communicate what you want to say. Grammar isn’t the most exciting part of learning a language, but it’s one of the most important tools. Without it, the meaning of what you’re trying to say can easily get lost or misconstrued. You want to be able to say something the same way every time, so your meaning is absolutely clear. Be considerate, be consistent. So while the rules may read like stereo instructions, they are really, really useful!
Trust us, it’s worth the work. When everything comes together just right, there can be a perfect conflagration of musical interpretation, wordless communication and physical unity that creates a magical experience for both the audience and the performers. Of course sometimes it doesn’t happen this way- mistakes are part of ITS, and can even lead to some pretty unforgettable moments (the good and the bad kind!). It also allows you to have an incredible amount of freedom while still dancing in a troupe situation. Maybe you’ve never heard the music before. Maybe you’ve never danced with the other people in the Formation before. They may not even speak the same language as you. If you all know the ITS vocabulary, you can look like a polished, choreographed troupe.

Saturday, 10:00-12:00

Bring more diversion, accuracy and challenge into your dance! After an invigorating warm-up to increase your balance and strength we will break down the technique and extensively drill the concept so that it gets into your muscle memory. We practice our dancers posture, learn ambitious new moves, work on broadening our movement vocabulary and develop small combinations to improve your overall dance presentation. Then we are ready for a decent stretching part to enhance your flexibility. A perfect way to end the week loosened and relaxed and ready to start the weekend energetic!

Open for all levels. Mandatory pre-registration up to 24 hours before each session.
